HAMILTON VS. JEFFERSON: THE RIVALRY THAT SHAPED AMERICA

Alexander Hamilton, the often overlooked founding father, helped get the Constitution ratified, served as the first Secretary of the Treasury, was like a son to Washington and perhaps should have been like a brother to Jefferson. Jefferson fought bitterly against Hamilton, articulating a different vision of America’s future. He promoted an agrarian democracy built upon geographic expansion—an “empire of liberty.” Eventually he resigned as Secretary of State in protest.
